Moran Tingkhong Division (Irrigation):

Introduction:

Irrigation Department, Govt. of Assam is the custodian of all the Irrigation Schemes in the State of Assam. The Department execute all the works, operate the schemes and also maintain them. Irrigation schemes provide the basic infrastructure for the growth of economy of the farmers of the district.

Vision:
Providing sound Irrigation facilities to the agricultural fields for increasing the productivity of grains and crops and also encouraging multiple cropping thereby ensuring economic upliftment of farmers

Mission:
Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Irrigation Structures for providing assured irrigation facility throughout the year for increasing the agricultural productivity.

Objective:
The major objective of Irrigation Department is to expand cultivable area under assured irrigation, improve on-farm water use efficiency to reduce wastage of water and enhance adoption of precision-irrigation.

Key Function:

  1. Planning and implementation of Irrigation Schemes and Command Area Development.
  2. Monitoring, operating, and maintenance of Irrigation Schemes 
  3. To increase Agricultural production by ensuring timely and adequate irrigation to the fields         
  4. To increase irrigation intensity by ensuring water throughout the year and thereby encouraging multiple patterns.       

General Overview:
The livelihood of most of the people of Assam depends on agriculture. Indian farmers are heavily dependent on Monsoon/Rainy season for crop cultivation. But if adequate amount of rainfall does not occur there occurs a draught like situation and the crops get affected. Irrigation Schemes facilitates adequate supply of water to the agricultural fields during the unfavourable climate conditions. Irrigation Department provides planning, commissioning and maintenance of Irrigation schemes in a scientific and cost efficient manner and increase productivity of agricultural products and also ensure economical upliftment of farmers.

Less rainfall during monsoon often leads to draught like situation affecting the crops. For the growth of Indian Economy and to feed its huge population, adequate supply of water to the cultivable lands is necessary through irrigation schemes. Irrigation Department does the work of planning and implementation of these irrigation schemes in a sustainable, scientific and cost effective manner.
