The State Election Commission, Assam was constituted in May, 1994 under provision of the Article 243K and 243 ZA of the Constitution of India, with a view to perform responsibilities viz. superintendence, direction and control of preparation of Electoral Rolls for and conduct of all elections to the Panchayats and Municipalities and the State Election Commission shall be consist of a State Election Commissioner to be appointed by the respective Governor of a State. Since then the State Election Commission, Assam has been discharging its constitutional responsibilities by holding elections to the Panchayats and Municipalities of the State.
